Group event – #OptOutside – 11/23

LOCATION CHANGE! This event will now be held at Orenco Woods Nature Park in Hillsboro!

PLEASE RSVP on form below for full info on hike (terrain details, carpooling, meet-up spots and time). Expect response e-mail within a few days.

Unlikely Hikers creates safer, supportive, intentional, body-positive outdoor community for people underrepresented in outdoor culture (people of color, people of size, trans, queer and beyond) We hike at a slower pace, together as a group. No hiker left behind! No bros! Absolutely no diet or weight loss talk. Be mindful of gender pronouns, group dynamics, microaggressions, cultural appropriation and different physical ability levels. People of all genders welcome!

This event is less about hiking and more about spending time in nature on a day many of us have off. I’ll be providing some refreshments and there is coverage from rain! This event is in collaboration with REI and their #OptOutside campaign!

WHEELCHAIR/MOBILITY DEVICE FRIENDLY: Main activities will be held in wheelchair accessible areas that do not have slopes. This is not exactly a hike so folks can choose to explore trails only if they desire to and we will have folks on hand to help if anyone wants to use their chairs on the trails. Accessible portapotty and it was clean! From park’s website: “Parts of the park are wheelchair accessible, including the Rock Creek Trail. Other trails at the park are made of compacted crushed gravel, which is firm and stable, though portions of some trails exceed 5 percent slope.”

PHOTO CONTEST! PRIZES! Everyone who wants to participate will receive a handout with various plant life found in the park. Snap a photo of what you find from the handout and upload to Instagram with the hashtags #UnlikelyHikers and #OptOutside. There will be PRIZES! Not about who takes the best photos! (Further details and instructions given at meet-up.)

Date: Friday, November 23rd

Location: Orenco Woods Nature Park

Time: 10am. 9am for carpooling (RSVP for more info, we are thinking about skipping carpooling unless it’s needed!)

Trail stats: This event is more of a gathering than a hike, but the trails themselves are less than 1 mile, elevation gain/loss 50 feet. The main events will be in flat, accessible areas and hiking by foot or chair is entirely up to you, personally! For those in chairs, we will have folks willing to lend a hand at any point if the gain/loss isn’t feeling good.

Cost: Event is free, no parking fee.

Dogs & kids are welcome! This area contains some wetland habitat, so please keep your dogs on leash. Care for your dogs properly and disclose any special info about them so we can all respect boundaries.
