Group Hike – Nice & Slow – Tryon Creek

Unlikely Hikers creates safer, supportive outdoor community for people underrepresented in outdoors culture. We hike together as a group. No hiker left behind! Absolutely no diet or weight loss talk. Be mindful of gender pronouns, group dynamics, microaggressions, cultural appropriation and different physical ability levels.
SERIES: Nice & Slow. This series is specifically designed for those who want to get out into nature, but have physical or health matters that may limit movement (chronic pain cuties, fat folks, people who might be exercising for the first time and/or people who may have vulnerabilities that require emotional support). All of our hikes are body- & fat-positive, but this series has an even stronger emphasis on this. (find out what series is best suited to you here)
LOCATION: Tryon Creek Natural Area
TIME: 10am | DRIVE TIME: 20m
TRAIL STATS: 2 miles (but we’ll decide how long we want to go together!), less than 50 ft. elevation gain.

TERRAIN: muddy, occasional roots and rocks, mostly clear trail.
Directions: google maps “Tryon Creek State Natural Area.” We’ll meet in front of the visitors center.
PARKING: no pass needed
KIDS: Unfortunately, this series is probably not the best for younger kids. Older kids, decide at your own discretion.
DOGS: Delicately, because I know we love our dogs, well-behaved, low stress dogs only for this series.
$1-$10 suggested sliding scale donation—no one turned away for lack of funds—to make these hikes more sustainable and regularly scheduled. Consider donating for someone who can’t! Cash accepted, though I won’t ask for money day-of. Thank you!

It will be a long day with travel and hike time, so bring plenty of water and snacks. Check weather closer to the day and dress for it.

Unlikely Hikers offers three hiking series for different needs and levels of intensity. 1) General, 2) Low Intensity & 3) Nice & Slow. We want you to to have the most fun and supportive experience possible! Ask yourself, “how does my body like to hike?” If you are someone who can hike big miles and high elevation gains, please refrain from joining our Low Intensity and Nice & Slow hikes. Similarly, if you are a beginner or your body doesn’t know what 5+ miles or 500+ feet of elevation feels like, our “general” hikes might not be right for you. NO HIKE IS “ONE SIZE FITS ALL” and choosing the wrong trail could potentially harm you. Find out what group is best for you here:
